Earth Day talk

I spent a few hours at Columbia's Earth Day celebration. In between chasing my kids around, I had a chance to talk to a lot of parents with kids in the Columbia Public School District.

There was a lot to talk about. Many, many parents are upset about the choices the district is making after it was unable to raise money for its budget deficit from the ballot issue earlier this month. It is sad to watch teachers find out they are losing their job. I found out a loved but untenured teacher lost her job -- I know of at least one or two others who will heave to leave their jobs because the district chose to take away some money that they were promised to keep.

It's hard to watch when a school district isn't rolling smoothly. I think it's something worth talking about. I look forward to seeing what happens and how soon the district will be able to get things back on track for this town's future!!
